Clerks and Officers Training

 Clerks Training Programme Leaflet

I am very pleased to introduce you to the updated Three Counties Clerks Training Programme for 2019/20.

This year we have introduced a Clerks Induction Day (previously known as New Clerks Training Day), this informal induction into the role covers all the basics that you will need to get stuck into your new position. It is suitable for new clerks and deputy/assistant clerks and is completely free of charge if you were recruited through SSALC. (there is a charge if you were recruited independently by the council).

Following the Clerks Induction, a Clerks Development Day has been introduced. This networking and information day is a fantastic introduction to implementing a Personal Development Plan and mapping out your individual personal training plan. You will receive an introduction to each training module, meet the highly skilled SSALC trainers and staff and have the opportunity to discuss your needs with them. You will also be able to network with fellow new clerks to build up a support system amongst your peers.

Once you have attended the Clerks Development Day you will have a better understanding of the training on offer and can begin to map out your Personal Development Plan.

The training modules SSALC offer are (please click on name for further details):

Each half day training session has a CPD (Continuing Professional Development) value of 2 points and a full day has a value of 3 points.

There is no need to attend every session within each module or indeed every module however, the more training you attend the wider your knowledge becomes and the more effective you will be within your role, plus for each module completed you will receive a Certificate of Completion!

Each training session can be attended while studying for your CiLCA (Certificate in Local Council Administration) qualification, further information regarding CiLCA and the support package we offer can be found here

There is a further programme of advanced courses which can be found hereSSALC Training Chart

The chart above illustrates the recommended order to carry out your training, all training can be attended by clerks, deputy/assistant clerks and officers of all levels of experience however it is highly recommended that new clerks and deputy/assistant clerks attend a Clerks Induction Day and a Clerks Development Day within 6 months of commencing the role and before attending any further training.

Don’t forget that clerks and officers can also attend our popular conferences and networking days which include Clerks Technical Networking Day, Legal & Finance Day and county specific Spring and Autumn Conferences. Details and booking forms can be found here

Other specialist training is available on request on topics such as Allotments, Cemeteries and Health & Safety Event Management. If you would like to have a chat about your training needs or have any questions, suggestions or ideas please contact the SSALC office on 01273 830204 or

I look forward to seeing you at a future event!
