NAMING AND REGISTERING .GOV WEBSITES

Local and regional government: naming and registering websites - GOV.UK

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/naming-and-registering-government-websites/local-and-regional-government-naming-and-registering-websites

1. Introduction

This guide sets out the rules, principles and the responsibilities for the applicant when registering a new domain name or managing an existing government domain name. This document contains the eligibility rules for .gov.uk registrations relevant to:

fire services

local authorities

o county councils

o borough/district councils

o parish/town councils

o unitary authorities

o metropolitan boroughs/districts

o combined authorities

devolved government

territorial police forces

police and crime commissioners

joint authorities, joint committees and partnership bodies including one or more of the above

Read separate guidance for central and devolved government departments, including agencies and non-departmental public bodies (NDPBs).

These guidelines apply to all new requests for registration. Existing domain names registered before these guidelines are regarded as exceptional and do not set a precedent. Domain names are not automatically issued or on a first come first served basis. All applications must follow the guidelines and are subject to the final authority of the Naming and Approvals Committee (NAC).
